U.S. Safety Building c1957
U.S. Safety is the operating division of Parmelee Industries, Inc., which was founded more than 70 years ago to preserve worker safety through the design and manufacture of personal protective equipment.
Today, U.S. Safety provides a full line of products and services, including prescription safety eyewear programs, non-prescription eyewear, goggles, face shields and respirators.
Although it is relatively small compared to its major competitors, U.S. Safety is a leader in the eye and face protection industry, serving a highly competitive market with a reputation for flexibility, responsive service and innovation.
The company’s headquarters are in Lenexa, KS, which includes its administrative offices, manufacturing operations, product testing laboratories, prescription safety lab, warehouse and distribution center.
U.S. Safety also has an overseas counterpart, Parmelee Ltd, serving the United Kingdom and portions of Europe with a full service prescription safety lab, warehouse and distribution center in Birmingham, England.

U.S. Safety is responsible for “12 Original Firsts”, including…
- First pop-in, pop-out replacement lenses for eyewear (Vari-Pop – late 70’s).
- First fashion frame work eyewear (Style-Safe - 1980).
- First polycarbonate faceshield crown.
- First optically correct goggle lens (Legend).
- First “twist-lock” cartridge respirators.
- First nylon graphite frame (Phoenix).
1970 OSH Act – Created OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration) and NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health). Required employers to make personal protective equipment available to their employees. Prior to that, it was voluntary.
