a Division of Parmelee Industries, Inc.
Parmelee Industries, Inc. was founded over 60 years ago on the ideal of providing
worker protection. Its operating division, U.S. Safety is dedicated solely to the
production, manufacture and sale of personal protective equipment. U.S.
Safety today manufactures a full line of personal protective products, including
prescription and plano eyewear, respirators, goggles, faceshields and welding
helmets. It is one of the top three companies in the U.S. fabricating protective
safety prescription eyewear.
In 1935, the foundation was laid for Parmelee Industries by
Mr. A. F. Parmelee,
who was doing consulting safety engineering work for many utility companies
throughout the nation. He established United States Safety Service Company (U.S.
Safety) and moved into a small office in the Uptown Theater Building on
Broadway, Kansas City, Missouri, in 1941. There was one employee-- Mr.
Parmelee's wife.
The business soon outgrew this small office and, in 1943, moved into larger
quarters at 3613 Broadway, where Parmelee Industries, Inc. was formed to become
the manufacturing arm of the business. It was there, in 1944, that the "Saf-I-Shield"
one-piece plastic goggle and the "Expendable" Salt Tablet Dispenser
were put into production. These were the first products manufactured and sold by
Parmelee Industries.
The Company continues to expand and grow. U.S. Safety's new corporate
headquarters in Lenexa, Kansas includes its corporate offices, a central
distribution center and warehouse facility, and a new state of the art,
prescription eyewear laboratory. This new facility has doubled the capacity and
capabilities of its prescription eyewear business and focused that division as
the company's core business.
U.S. Safety currently has manufacturing facilities in Windsor, Missouri; and
Lenexa, Kansas. It has sales offices in major industrial cities of the United
States, and its customers range from fortune 500 companies, state, local and
federal government agencies, to walk in customers at its Lenexa headquarters.
The company employs over 100 full time people in U.S.
operations.
